Teen and Adolescent Psychologist Rustenburg
You don’t have to figure it all out on your own.
Is Life Feeling a Little Heavy Right Now?
Being a teenager in Rustenburg—or anywhere, really—isn’t as easy as adults sometimes make it sound. There is so much pressure to get the grades, make the team, fit in with friends, and somehow figure out who you are, all while your brain and emotions feel like they are on a rollercoaster.
If you are reading this, maybe you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just “off.” Maybe you feel like no one really gets what it’s like to be you right now.
I’m Stephanie de Raay, a Teen and Adolescent Psychologist serving Rustenburg. I’m here to tell you that what you are feeling is valid, and you don’t have to carry it alone.
A Little About Me (I’m Not a Scary Doctor in a White Coat)
I know the idea of seeing a “psychologist” can feel intimidating. You might picture someone older, staring at you over a clipboard, expecting you to have all the answers. That’s not me.
I am a young professional, which means I am not that far removed from the pressures you are facing right now. I understand the world of social media, the academic grind, and how complicated friendships can get.
I studied at the University of Pretoria (Tuks), so I know the specific vibe and intense pressure of student life in our part of the world. My goal isn’t to judge you or act like I know better—it’s to be a teammate who helps you navigate the messy parts of growing up.
A Space Just for You (Private & Safe)
I offer secure video call sessions, which means we can talk while you are in your own room, a safe spot in your house, or anywhere you feel comfortable.
-
It’s Private: No one sees you walking into a clinic.
-
It’s Your Space: You control your environment.
-
It’s Confidential: What we talk about stays between us (unless you are in serious danger, which we will discuss).
How I Can Help You
I’m not here to tell you what to do or to “fix” you, because you aren’t broken. I’m here to help you understand why you feel the way you do and give you actual tools to handle it.
Here is what we can work on together:
Teen Anxiety and Stress
Do you ever feel a tightness in your chest before school or exams? Or maybe your brain won’t stop racing at 2 AM with “what if” scenarios? Anxiety often feels like a constant buzz in the background that stops you from relaxing. We can work on quieting that noise so you can breathe easier and focus on the things you actually enjoy.
Teen Depression and Mood Swings
Sometimes it feels like you are walking through mud while everyone else is running on pavement. You might feel irritable, exhausted, or just “empty” for no clear reason. It’s not just about “being sad”—it’s about losing the spark for things you used to love. I can help you find small ways to get that energy back and lift the fog.
Teen Friendships and Relationships
Navigating social circles in Rustenburg can be tough. Maybe you feel left out, or there is drama that feels impossible to escape. Or perhaps things at home with your parents feel like a constant battleground. We can talk about how to set boundaries, how to communicate so people actually listen, and how to deal with conflicts without losing yourself.
Teen Self-Esteem and Identity
With social media, it is so easy to compare your “behind-the-scenes” with everyone else’s “highlight reel.” If you constantly feel like you aren’t good enough, smart enough, or cool enough, we need to change that narrative. I want to help you see your own value, separate from likes, grades, or what other people think.
How We Work Together
I use methods like DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) and BWRT (BrainWorking Recursive Therapy).
I know those sound like fancy medical words, but really, they are just effective ways to hack your brain’s stress response.
What is DBT?
Think of DBT like a toolkit for your brain. Sometimes, emotions hit us like a tsunami—fast and overwhelming. You might feel angry, sad, or panicked from 0 to 100 in seconds. DBT teaches you how to “surf” those waves instead of drowning in them.
We look at practical things: how to tolerate distress when things suck (without making them worse), how to ask for what you need in relationships, and how to be mindful of the present moment so you aren’t constantly worrying about the future or regretting the past. It’s about building a life that feels worth living, even when things are tough.
What is BWRT?
This is a science-based method that helps “rewire” automatic reactions. If you have a phobia, or a traumatic memory that makes you freeze up, BWRT helps stop that reaction before it even starts.
Ready to Talk?
You deserve to feel okay. You deserve to feel heard.
If you are looking for a teen and adolescent psychologist in Rustenburg who gets it, I’d love to chat. You can even send me a message just to ask how it works before you decide.
Let’s connect. Ask your parents to help you set up a session, or if you are old enough, you can reach out directly.

FAQ: How Online Teen Therapy Actually Works
“What if my parents can hear me from the other room?”
This is the biggest worry for most teens, and it makes sense—you want your space to be yours. I recommend wearing headphones or earbuds during our sessions; it keeps our conversation private and helps you focus. You can also sit in the garden, in a parked car (if the Wi-Fi reaches), or put a fan on by your door for “white noise.” We will find a setup that makes you feel safe to talk.
“Is it awkward talking to a psychologist on a screen?”
Honestly? It might feel a little strange for the first 5 minutes, kind of like the first time you FaceTime a new friend. But because you are in your own comfortable space (and not a stiff medical office), most teens actually find it easier to open up. You can wear your comfy clothes, have your pet with you, and just be yourself.
“Do I need a fancy laptop or expensive setup?”
Nope. As long as you have a device with a camera (a smartphone, tablet, or laptop) and a decent internet connection, you are good to go. I’ll send you a secure link, you click it, and we are connected. It’s that simple.
“Does video therapy actually work, or is it just ‘chatting’?”
It is definitely real therapy. We use the exact same psychological methods (like DBT and BWRT) that we would use in person. The only difference is that we are connecting digitally. It is just as professional, just as confidential, and just as effective—minus the awkward waiting room.
“What happens if the Wi-Fi drops?”
Don’t stress! Technology isn’t perfect. If the video freezes or the sound cuts out, we just pause, reconnect, or switch to a WhatsApp audio call if we need to. It happens, and we just roll with it. No pressure.

It is important to note that online therapy is not suited to everyone. For individuals who are in crisis, with self-harm or suicidal risks, or in need of in-patient admission, it is strongly advised that they seek therapeutic intervention with an in-person psychologist. If requested, I will be able to provide a list of recommended psychologists in your area. If at any time during the therapeutic process I feel that online therapy is no longer suitable or clinically adequate, I will refer you to a trusted colleague who can take over your therapeutic process in-person.
Therapy sessions are scheduled for 55 minutes and fees are aligned with current medical aid rates. Please note that this practice operates as a cash practice, requiring payment on the day of your session and I do not claim on your behalf from your medical aid. I will issue you with an invoice which you can then submit to your medical aid for reimbursement.
