Psychologist for Teens in Lichtenburg
Helping teens find balance, confidence, and connection — one conversation at a time.
A Safe Online Space for Teens — Wherever You Are
Growing up is not easy. Many young people face emotional ups and downs, pressures from school, friendships, family expectations, and the challenge of figuring out who they are.
I’m Stephanie de Raay, a Counselling Psychologist registered with the HPCSA (PS 0154580). I offer virtual counselling for teens in Lichtenburg, the North West Province, and across South Africa, giving adolescents a caring, confidential space to explore their thoughts and emotions.
My practice is entirely online, so therapy sessions take place from the comfort and privacy of your own home — an environment where many teens feel safest to open up.
Meet Stephanie de Raay, Counselling Psychologist
I consider myself a warm, empathetic, and person-centred therapist. I believe that every person — and especially every teenager — has a deep need to be heard, accepted, and understood.
After completing my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at the University of Pretoria, I interned at the therapy and assessment centre at Epworth Children’s Village, where I learned the importance of meeting clients where they are emotionally.
Since entering private practice, I’ve worked with adolescents from a variety of backgrounds and have developed a strong interest in supporting those dealing with anxiety, trauma, loss, and adjustment difficulties. My approach is integrative, drawing from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT®), and mindfulness-based techniques to guide each young person toward self-understanding and emotional growth.
Why Choose Online Therapy for Teens in Lichtenburg?
Online therapy offers the same connection and compassion as in-person counselling, but with extra flexibility. For teens and parents in Lichtenburg and the greater North West region, virtual sessions make therapy accessible even when distance, time, or transport make traditional appointments difficult.
Online counselling works well for teens who prefer familiar surroundings or live in smaller communities where privacy matters. The sessions are supportive, structured, and always focused on what your teen needs most.
For clients who may require in-person care or are experiencing a crisis, I can provide referrals to trusted psychologists nearby who can meet those needs.
What Teens (and Parents) Can Expect
Before your first session, you’ll receive a secure Zoom link to join at the agreed-upon time. The initial session is a gentle introduction — a conversation about what brought your teen to therapy, what they’d like to change, and how we can work together toward that goal.
I’ll listen with curiosity and care, ensuring the process feels relaxed and collaborative. Together, we’ll build a plan that helps your teen understand emotions, manage stress, and strengthen self-confidence.
Each consultation lasts around 50–55 minutes, usually once per week, and is completely dedicated to your teen’s growth and well-being.

Therapeutic Approaches
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
DBT helps young people learn mindfulness, emotional regulation, and communication skills — tools for navigating strong feelings and improving relationships.
BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT®)
BWRT® is a neuroscience-based method that helps rewire automatic stress responses. It’s particularly useful for teens who’ve experienced trauma or anxiety and prefer not to talk about painful events in detail.
Mindfulness-Based Practices
Mindfulness teaches awareness of the present moment, allowing teens to observe thoughts and feelings without judgment. This helps them respond thoughtfully rather than react automatically.
Fees and Duration
The number of sessions varies depending on each teen’s needs and progress. Some prefer short-term therapy (a few sessions), while others benefit from longer-term support.
This is a cash practice, and fees align with current medical aid rates. Payment is made via EFT on the day of your session. After each session, I’ll send an invoice that you can submit to your medical aid for reimbursement.
How to Book an Online Session
Getting started is simple. Reach out via WhatsApp or email, and once I receive your message, I’ll arrange a short courtesy call so we can discuss your needs and book your first appointment.

Is Online Therapy Right for My Teen?
For many teens in Lichtenburg and surrounding North West communities, online counselling offers a sense of privacy, accessibility, and consistent support. It’s an opportunity for your teen to talk openly, gain insight, and build emotional strength — all from a comfortable, familiar setting.
If your teen is ready to begin their journey toward greater confidence, calm, and connection, I’d be honoured to walk that path with them — with empathy, respect, and genuine care.
🌿 Your teen’s story matters. Let’s take the first step together.
Questions You Might Have About Online Counselling for Teens
Here are some of the most common questions parents and teens ask before starting online therapy.
These answers are here to help you feel more comfortable and informed before taking the next step.
1. What exactly is online counselling for teens?
Online counselling is a form of professional therapy provided through secure video platforms like Zoom. It allows teenagers to connect with a registered psychologist in a private and familiar setting, receiving the same care and guidance they would in an in-person session.
2. Is virtual therapy really helpful for teenagers?
Yes — research and experience show that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person counselling for most teens. The relaxed environment of home often helps young people feel more at ease, making it easier to open up, share honestly, and engage meaningfully in their sessions.
3. How do I know if my teen could benefit from therapy?
If your teen has been showing signs of emotional distress — like irritability, sadness, anxiety, or withdrawal from friends or family — therapy might be a good step. But therapy isn’t only for crisis; it can also be a space for personal growth, building self-awareness, and developing resilience.
4. What happens during the first online session?
Before the session, you’ll receive a secure link to join online. The first meeting is about getting to know your teen and understanding what brought them to therapy. We’ll discuss their goals, background, and what they hope to change. It’s also a chance to see if they feel comfortable with me as their therapist.
5. How long does each session last?
Sessions usually run for 50–55 minutes, giving enough time to talk, reflect, and work through key themes without feeling rushed. Together we’ll find a rhythm that fits your teen’s routine and needs.
6. How many sessions will my teen need?
There’s no single answer — every teen is unique. Some might find relief in a few sessions, while others benefit from a longer process that allows deeper emotional growth. We’ll review progress regularly to ensure therapy continues to feel helpful and relevant.
7. What kinds of challenges can be supported in therapy?
Online counselling can help with a wide range of issues, including:
-
Anxiety and stress
-
Depression and low mood
-
Self-esteem or identity struggles
-
Friendship and family difficulties
-
Grief and loss
-
School pressure and burnout
-
Emotional regulation or behavioural challenges
Therapy helps teens better understand themselves and develop tools for handling life’s ups and downs.
8. How does online counselling work for teens in Lichtenburg?
Sessions are conducted online, so geography isn’t a barrier. Whether your teen is in Lichtenburg, the North West Province, or elsewhere in South Africa, they can access support using any private device with internet access. This flexibility helps families in smaller towns connect to care more easily.
9. What therapeutic approaches do you use?
I integrate Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT®), and mindfulness-based techniques. These approaches help teens learn to regulate emotions, manage anxiety, process past experiences, and respond to stress in healthier ways.
10. Is online therapy suitable for teens who are in crisis?
Online counselling isn’t the right fit for someone who’s in immediate crisis, engaging in self-harm, or struggling with suicidal thoughts. In such cases, it’s best to seek in-person support from a local psychologist or crisis service. I can refer families to trusted professionals in their area if needed.
11. How can we schedule an appointment?
You can contact me directly via WhatsApp or email to arrange a session. After receiving your enquiry, I’ll set up a short call to discuss your teen’s needs, explain how the process works, and confirm a convenient time for your first online session.

12. How do payments work for online sessions?
My practice operates on a cash basis, with fees aligned to current medical aid rates. Payment is made via EFT on the day of your session. I’ll email a statement afterward, which you can send to your medical aid for reimbursement.
13. What are some common issues teens face that therapy can help with?
Adolescence comes with big emotions and new responsibilities. Many teens struggle with pressure to perform, low confidence, emotional overwhelm, social anxiety, grief, or adjusting to life changes. Therapy offers a safe space to explore these experiences, learn coping strategies, and build a stronger sense of self.
Teen support across the North West Province
Stephanie supports teens and families across the North West Province. Whether you’re in Lichtenburg, where options for professional psychological support are limited and privacy in a farming community matters, or you’re in a neighbouring town facing similar challenges, help is available.

It is important to note that online therapy is not suited to everyone. For individuals who are in crisis, with self-harm or suicidal risks, or in need of in-patient admission, it is strongly advised that they seek therapeutic intervention with an in-person psychologist. If requested, I will be able to provide a list of recommended psychologists in your area. If at any time during the therapeutic process I feel that online therapy is no longer suitable or clinically adequate, I will refer you to a trusted colleague who can take over your therapeutic process in-person.
Therapy sessions are scheduled for 55 minutes and fees are aligned with current medical aid rates. Please note that this practice operates as a cash practice, requiring payment on the day of your session and I do not claim on your behalf from your medical aid. I will issue you with an invoice which you can then submit to your medical aid for reimbursement.
