1. How do I know if I need therapy?
Therapy is for everyone, no matter the reasoning. You do not just have be in a crisis or feel like everything is becoming too overwhelming and difficult to manage in order to attend therapy. Therapy can also be about seeking growth, clarity and gaining a deeper understanding about ourself.
You can consider seeking out therapeutic support if you notice that you are experiencing persistent emotional distress and noticeable changes in your mood, behaviour and relationships. You can also consider seeking out therapeutic support if you wish to dive deeper into certain thought patterns, beliefs about the self or to pursue self-development.
2. Online Therapy
I work exclusively online providing teletherapy through platforms such as Zoom. Online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy providing a degree of convenience for many clients who may be juggling busy work schedules, navigating rural or remote living, experiencing physical limitations or just preferring the comfort of their own home. Although the setting may be different, the purpose and intention of each session will remain empathetic, client focused, and treatment driven.
It is important to note that online therapy is not for everyone – if at any time you decide that you would prefer to work with a therapist in person, please inform me and I will send you a list of recommended psychologists who are based in your area. Online therapy is not suited to someone in crisis, with self-harm/suicidal risk or in need of risk management (e.g. inpatient admissions). If at any time I feel that online therapy is not clinically adequate, I will need to refer you to a trusted colleague who can see you face to face.
3. Bookings
Bookings can be done directly through me via my email address or my WhatsApp number. I will set up a courtesy call with you once I have received your enquiry so that we can discuss the therapy process as well as determining a suitable appointment time for us to have your first online session. Online appointments are 50-55 minutes in duration, at a typical frequency of once per week, or as agreed upon between the therapist and client. The time booked for your appointment is scheduled to you alone.
4. What to expect in your first session?
So, you have booked your first online therapy session, and you are wondering what to expect. Prior to your first online session you will receive a zoom link that will allow you to log onto your session at your scheduled time. The first session will typically be used to ask some questions about what has brought you to your first session. These questions are designed to gain a better understanding of who you are, your context and what your concerns are. We will also discuss your expectations of therapy and your goals. All of this will inform your treatment plan and therapeutic process to follow. This first session will also be used to allow you the opportunity to determine if I am the right fit for you and to ask any questions that you may have.
5. Duration of Therapy
The therapeutic journey is a collaborative one between the client and the therapist and the duration is typically discussed and decided on together depending on the presenting concerns and treatment plan. While some therapeutic journeys may be brief (1-6 sessions) some clients and concerns require a more long-term approach. The duration of therapy is informed by many factors and is uniquely specific to each client.
6. Fees
I run a cash practice and my fees are aligned with current medical aid rates. Fees are payable by EFT on the day of your session. Please note that I do not submit invoices to medical aid on your behalf and I do not accept payment directly from medical aid. I will e-mail you a statement at the end of your session, which can then be sent by you to your medical aid for reimbursement. It is recommended that you contact your medical aid to enquire about your availability of funds and benefits.
